There are many paths to recovery.
Find the one that's right for you.

Recovery coaching and outdoor activities to help you find your path and stay on it.

Recovery coaching can help you find what works for you, faster.

Personalized Recovery Coaching

Recovery coaching is tailored to your individual needs to help you find the path to recovery that works best for you. Your program is always your choice and you're in control of your recovery. I'm here to ask the right questions and point out possibilities.

Available by Zoom or in person in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Let's start with a no-cost, no-commitment meeting, see what each other is about, and go from there.

Outdoor Recovery Hikes and More

COMING SOON! In addition to recovery coaching, I offer outdoor activities such as hiking to add the benefits of movement, nature and fun to your recovery journey. Watch for details on the first hikes in  Spring 2024 in the mountains, forests and foothills west of Calgary.

The plan is to start with easy hikes suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness, because the mountains are for everyone, not just the super fit.

Build the Life You Want to Live

Connect with other active people in recovery, build community, and develop your skills and experience to get out on your own. The point of recovery is to freely live the life you want. Recovery coaches and communities are here to help you do it.

If you're not into hiking and aren't sure what you are into, there's an activity or group out there with your name on it. Recovery coaching can help you figure it out.

The path from dreams to success does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get on to it, and the perseverance to follow it.

Ken Schmaltz: Recovery Coach, Hiker, and a Guy Walking the Same Path as You

Hi, I'm Ken. When I quit drinking in 2009, reconnecting with the hiking, skiing and other outdoor activities that I'd been so passionate about in the past was like reconnecting with myself, and time spent hauling my butt up mountains and down valleys became a key part of my recovery program. And it's now a major part of my lifestyle and an expression of how I live my values. I've served as a volunteer hiking, scrambling and backcountry ski leader with a couple of local clubs, and I'm on the board of directors of Crossing the Divide Experience, a non-profit that takes disadvantaged youth into the wilderness. Through this, I've also built a community of friends and even met my partner. Back in 2009, I'd had said you were crazy if you told me all this was possible, let alone that it would actually happen.

To help me share with others a bit of what I've learned on my recovery path, I've earned a certificate in recovery coaching, the SMART Recovery Facilitator certificate, the SMART Recovery Friends and Family Facilitator certificate, and the Outdoor Council of Canada Field Leader (Hiking) designation. I'd love to hear from you if you'd like more information about what a recovery coach can add to your recovery program, or if you've been looking at the mountains to the west, feel their pull, and want to get out on a trail. Not a hiker? No problem. It's your recovery, not mine. Let's find what will work for you.

I will not follow where the path may lead, but I will go where there is no path, and I will leave a trail.
